Over the last few years we’ve all heard about the many benefits of coconut oil … but as a makeup remover!?
One night I ran out of my makeup remover, and hating the feel of waking up with mascara caked on my eyes I decided to try to find something I could use at home to help take it off. What I found was coconut oil. I regularly use coconut oil to moisturize my face but I was leery about its effectiveness at taking off waterproof mascara. I was in a bind though so I decided to give it a try, and it worked! Not only did it take of my makeup but it made my skin feel so soft.
When using coconut oil as a makeup remover it is a very cost-effective option compared to name brand makeup removers because very small amounts do the trick. In addition, it is completely natural so you are only putting the best on your skin, skipping those harsh chemicals and preservatives. Coconut oil’s antioxidants help reduce wrinkles and promote healthy skin, benefits you get when using it as a makeup remover. It’s antibacterial properties help fight common skin problems like acne and other skin conditions. Coconut oil is a great moisturizer that absorbs into the skin quickly and easily, giving your skin moisture without the greasy feel or look.
What to look for when buying: Organic, unrefined coconut oil because it hasn’t been stripped of its beneficial properties.
How to remove makeup:
Take coconut oil (about the size of a pea up to a dime) and rub it between your fingers until it turns a transparent liquid. Rub it all over your face and leave on for a few minutes. Next, take a cotton ball or cotton pad and gently remove the coconut oil and makeup from your face. Coconut oil is a great degreaser so it dissolves the makeup as it sits on it.
If you have some waterproof makeup to remove it might take another application of the coconut oil followed up by a few more swipes with the cotton ball before it is completely gone. For my waterproof mascara and eye liner, I rub the coconut oil on my eyes really well, wipe it off with a cotton ball, rub it on again, and wipe it off again. Then you are done! Quick, easy, and effective.
